I'm glad it was some use, I have to be honest, Ive not used it much since that review... there something blocking me... I need to get past a wall... Sampling was a real downer, and I have had terrible trouble with editing imported loops too... PLUS.. I filled the memory!!! Im mean who makes a product that asks the user to record into it, but then fils up the memory so that 4 drum loops later the memory is full... I guess I have to go thru and delete all those stupid skat singing things and funky guitar chops, but why? Annoying... Im not one to use computer loaders either.. I just dont have time... I do music an 1 hour bursts, if I have to faff with getting things on and off a computer first, Ill never do it... so Im working with the factory sounds, and thats fun...

Mark,

Excellent insights regarding the ESX-1. Personally, I've got the EMX-1, which is the same puppy with pre-recorded samples and no sampling. I love it, but bought it without illusions that it would be anything more than just a groove box. (well, that's a bit of a lie; finding out after my purchase that you could use the effects section on live audio was a pleasant little extra.)

I was a bit surprised to hear your reaction to the valves, though. While I agree with your concerns on the wisdom of being forced to fuzzball the whole damn mix (unless you wanted to hocket the parameters to distort only certain beats, for instance), I actually quite like the tube effect. On my EMX, you can turn it up until it *just* starts to effect the mix and it will add a very pleasant psychoacoustic effect -- almost more like a stereo widener than any actual distortion. However, no two tubes are alike. I'd see about swapping your tube out, as I've had some luck with that strategy on other devices.

Anyway, I've always had this secret fear that perhaps I should have gone for the ESX merely to gain the sampling capability. Since you've posted many of the obvious shortcomings of its sampling architecture, you've done a great job at setting my mind at ease on that point. I can just enjoy the EMX for what it is -- a great drum machine -- and forget about all the 'what ifs' regarding whether I made the best purchase for my own purposes. I also hope you can look past some of the limitations you've found on the ESX, and enjoy its strengths as well.

Thanks!!! :)

Indeed, I wouldn't mind personally. I of course already have Premiere as part of CS5,, so its a logical move. the only thing is when you have built a company on FCP, and need to continue to be able to offer edits and re-works... We'll just have to keep FCP around for fixes..

Its sad that apple dropped the ball and is shooting for the prosumer market. Really its not so bad since adobe Premiere has become a great editor ever since CS3. With native support for DSLR files (H.264) and round-trip dynamic link with great adobe apps like After Effects and Audition you won't miss Final Cut at all.

Absolutely! But local small sale gigs don't exactly pay, and in my day, touring didn't pay either! Its was a marketing exercise to encourage sales of an album. The tours were most often loss funded by the record company (called tour support) and personal income derived through merchandising, (T-Shirt Sales). Not possible now, as the cost of touting a 8 man entourage (4 band 4 crew) would not be financially viable. Thus one man mans, can do quite OK, groups less so.

See, that's why performing live is absolutely essential, unless you go viral. Performing live is our main source of cash, whether it be busking or doing shows. It's not easy, but it's doable.

There is also the option of getting money through google adsense if you have videos on YouTube
